Put a tablecloth on the table or use placemats if you so desire. A tablecloth is more formal than placemats so base this on the level of formality you\'re going for at your luncheon. Give your guests plenty of space; the standard width of a place setting is about 24 inches.
Set a large plate at each place setting. Place a small bread plate at the top left of this large plate. Put the soup bowl on top of the dinner plate.
Place a fork to the left of the large plate and set a knife to the right. The cutting edge should face inward toward the plate. To the right of the knife, place a teaspoon.
Fold a cloth napkin (or at least a good quality paper napkin) and place it to the left of the fork.
Add a drinking glass directly above the knife and spoon. A coffee or tea cup with a saucer goes to the right of the glass.
